It was that time of the year again. My son Eddie’s 8th birthday was fast approaching, and after last years cool Karate Party I was wondering what on earth we would do for this year’s theme. Things have a way of making themselves obvious where Eddie’s concerned though. He had a new obsession. Of ALL things…. it was James Bond! Not entirely appropriate for an 8 year old, but my husband had been showing him some of the coolest parts of certain James Bond films (while avoiding the really violent and sexy bits) and it seems the oh so cool and suave Bond really struck a chord with our young man, particularly Pierce Brosnan. I must admit I never saw this one coming! Eddie begged for a James Bond ‘costume’ and desperately wanted a 007 party. Ummm…. considering most of his friends don’t even know who James Bond is I convinced Ed that a ‘Movie’ theme would be a better idea, and he agreed that would work. As long as he got to posture around in a dinner suit with a lemonade martini he was happy! So I bought some inexpensive second hand ‘pageboy’ items on Ebay. (Thank heavens for Ebay!)
Before the party I decided to take Eddie into the studio for some photographs so I could attempt to mock up a poster as a present for him. I’m a little nervous about showing these images because I am one of those people who really hates guns. In fact I was always going to be a mother who didn’t allow her kids to have toy guns. I’m not sure what changed that. I’ll admit it was partly out of my enthusiasm to make the posters really cool. But the main reason was that I realised Eddie is not a violent kid by nature, and that to him the appeal of Bond is all about being cool, in control, problem solving and intelligent. Oh, and to look good. He is a somewhat vain creature… my Ed! Ha ha ha….
Anyway, here are the 2 posters that I printed and framed for his birthday, followed by lots of photographs from Eddie’s cool Movie Party!

We set the scene for the the Movie Party by hanging blank CD’s from fishing line all over the room, and borrowed a few movie posters from our local video store. We also played movie theme music, like the James Bond theme, Mission Impossible, Star Wars, Transformers and Spiderman. It was very cool! I hadn’t actually predicted Scooby Doo though!

Eddie was a gracious host, and was in his element sitting at the head of the dinner table with all of his best friends.

Time for cake! I drew the line at making a gun cake, mostly because of my horror at the thought of black icing. Yeeuch! So I settled on a popcorn cake instead. Unfortunately I don’t think the guests quite got the connection. They still ate the cake though…. so that’s O.K.

Just heart stoppingly gorgeous. He makes me weak at the knees sometimes.

The popcorn cake, which didn’t really turn out anything like I originally planned. It was yummy though.

On to the party games. As hard as I tried I couldn’t come up with any movie themed games, so I just set out to make them a little ridiculous and lots of fun. The first game was a race to eat Fruit Loops from a string without using their hands. Funny!

The second game was to knock a rubber ball of the top of a container…. using only a serving spoon hanging between the legs on a string. Lots of hip thrusting and wriggling. Even funnier!

The last game was a riot. Quite simply they had to wrap each other up like a Mummy using toilet paper. I could never have predicted how much the kids would love this game. SO much fun with just one pack of budget loo paper. My husband Mick reckoned it’s because they’re told their entire lives not to waste the stuff…. so to be told ‘go for it’ was like an 8 year old’s version of heaven!

We had an uneven number of contestants, so lucky little Perry (my other son) scored Daddy as his wrapper. Daddy was VERY skilled with toilet paper as it turned out!

Eight year olds in heaven.

The aftermath! Just awesome.

It really was a great party. Without doubt the best part for the kids was the games. They loved them, and wanted to play each game a second time. I had realised that ‘Statues’ and ‘Simon Says’ really wasn’t going to cut it for the kids now they’re getting older. It really was worth the time I spent dreaming up very silly games, and they do love it when things are well organised. My other little man, Perry, has started school this year, so the next major party will be for him. It seems I’ve unwittingly set a precendant for awesome birthday parties now, so I better start planning soon. Oh Lord… the pressure!!! I dare not let them down. It’s not really about the party itself though, and it’s certainly not about being fancy or spending a lot of money. It’s about showing them how important and special they are by making a lot of effort. Eddie certainly gets that part, and not only buzzed for days after his party, but also thanked us many times… even days later. Yeah. I’m very happy!

Happy New Year!

I have soul searched for a worthwhile New Year’s Resolution for this year. It doesn’t need to be anything too profound, and even though I really should quit all of my bad personal habits, keep my house perfectly organised and tidy….. oh and lose weight, I thought of something even better. I’m desperate to catch up on posting my weddings in this journal. I’ve been trying to catch up for so long, but because I’ve been flat out with shooting and editing weddings it just seem like an impossible task. When I started this Journal early in 2009 I began by back dating the first few entries because I wanted to post about the weddings I had shot in the previous 6 months. Since then I have fallen further and further behind, with little hope of ever catching up. So my resolution is to jump forward to the very last wedding I shot, and keep it that way. From now on I will post about each wedding the week after I photograph it. Phew. THAT feels good.

The only problem with this plan is I have photographed so many wonderful couples and magnificent weddings in the last 6 months that I desperately want to post about those as well. So I’m going to attempt to intersperse some of last year’s weddings with the current ones. I doubt I’ll be able to catch up enough to post about every single one, so I’ll just be choosing them randomly. They’ll be my ‘turn back the clock’ posts!

I feel good about this decision, and I’m determined to keep my New Year’s resolution. So my very next post will be the last wedding I photographed, then I will go backwards until I photograph my next wedding in mid January. Confusing? Yeah, I’m a little confused myself, but maybe that’s because the ‘Naughties’ are finished, and I have no idea what ridiculous cute nick name they’re going to give this decade. The Tenties? Oh Lord, I hope not!

These days I’m so busy with weddings and portrait sessions I hardly ever make time to take photos for myself, or more specifically of my kids. The only exception is Christmas and the boy’s birthdays, so with my eldest boy Eddie’s 7th birthday approaching I persuaded him into the studio one afternoon back in February. (Yes, I’ve been meaning to post this for about 2 months now. Did I mention how busy I am?)

There’s a little more to the story than that though, and it all started with me buying Kung Fu Panda and Karate Kid on DVD for the boys. Perry liked the movies, but for Eddie it was like a bolt from the blue! He BEGGED me for Karate lessons. My husband and I actually loved the idea, so we quickly joined him up at a local Karate school . Right from the very first class Eddie was just rapt, and took me quite by surprise with his level of enthusiasm and dedication. Watching his little face during class just kills me! He is SO serious… his features set with intense concentration. Once I bought his Gi for him and he put it on, he was very keen to have his photograph taken. Of course this was a first, so I leapt at such a golden opportunity.

It’s such a thrill watching Ed’s second teeth coming through. He knocked out a front tooth when he was not quite 4, so we’ve been looking at that gap for a long time now. I always said it made him look like a hillbilly, though a very cute one. I think he’ll look amazing with a full set of beautiful new front teeth.

My two little boys, Perry and Eddie. They are so beautiful… I can hardly breathe looking at these images. Perry lost interest after this brief cameo appearance, and left Ed and I alone.

I was amazed when I looked at these on the back of the camera. I had no idea that Eddie could kick so high! These images were taken after his second karate lesson, so he’s only a raw beginner. I know I’m biased (that’s my job…. hee hee) but his balance and flexibility are astounding. I wondered if I had him at the right kind of lessons… and if I should change his name to Eddie Elliot!

Eddie was having a ball doing these screaming jumps for me. He did it over and over for half an hour until he was sweating and puffing. After EVERY one he ran over to look on the back of the camera. We’d zoom right in on his face, and collapse on the floor, howling with laughter at what we called his ‘effort face’. Snarling, grimacing, flared nostrils, tongue out to the side. Eddie decided he wanted one with a nice face, and took another run up. The last image (below) is the result of that attempt. The worst cheeseball grin I’ve ever seen! We both laughed until we were in pain. Every time I look at this image I’ll be reminded of that magic moment with my little boy… laughing so hard we nearly peed our pants! Brilliant!!!

I took this image very wide, and thought I’d post it that way for anyone who’s interested in seeing my lighting set-up. That’s an octabox at front left, and a grid at back right.

My eldest son Eddie had his 7th birthday recently, and with his new obsession with Karate there was never any doubt over the theme for his birthday party. My husband Mick and I put our thinking caps on, and made a plan to create a dojo in our living area. I took care of the paper lanterns, headbands, kid friendly chopsticks and birthday cake. Poor Mick had a roll of brown paper, some black poster paint and a printed out sheet of Kanje characters thrust at him, and was asked to create some oriental masterpieces. Ha! He did a brilliant job, though heaven only knows what he wrote on those banners! My sister is fluent in Japanese, so I must ask her to translate. Mick’s secretly hoping the translations are at least a little bit rude!

Our best attempt at a dojo.
The birthday cake. I wasn’t feeling up to attempting a dragon, so I settled on a Gi with a liquorish black belt. My Mum and sister said I should have put a head on it. Sheeeesh!
Ed was really pleased with his cake. He had 5 friends from school to help celebrate his birthday.A rare family photograph, taken by my sister, Sue. Now I’m wondering what I wrote on those headbands. I’ll ask my other sister….
The kids ate all their party food with the chopsticks that I had tied together with rubber bands. They thought it was great fun eating Cheezels and party pies with chopsticks.

One of the party games I dreamed up. I called this game ‘Harmony and Focus’…. inspired by Kung Fu Panda. I made them all sit cross legged with their eyes closed, and pretend to meditate. If they laughed… they were out! Then of course all the adults did everything they could to make the kids laugh. It was super funny watching them contort their little faces, trying not to laugh. Other games included throwing fried dim sims into china noodle bowls, catching tiny rice crackers in a bowl with chopsticks, and musical statues to “Kung Fu Fighting” and “Turning Japanese”. The party was brilliant. I wonder what we’ll do next year? I can’t wait!!

Thanks for stopping by. I’ve always wanted to start a journal (blog) but could never seem to find the time to get one organised. At last I’ve done something about it, and it’s almost ready. Now I just need to find some time to make posts! I just gave my website a quick spruce up, and decided to add links to this journal to save having to do it later. I hope to have some posts with photographs up very soon.

So for the time being I will simply say sorry for it’s emptiness, and ask that you stop by again soon.
